Clean eyelids are a sign of healthy eyes.

Eyelid and eyelash hygiene is critical in the prevention of flogistic or infective phenomena on the eyelids and the conjunctiva.

Children are known to be reluctant in washing their eyes, often following the negative experience of soap seeping in the eyes during face washing; this reluctancy can remain and subconsciously influence the future habits of avoiding systematic and regular cleansing of the eye and surrounding area of the adult. Proper routine hygiene of the eyelids is necessary in presence of blepharitis, before and after eye surgery and by contact lenses wearers.

Among the most frequent causes, blepharitis is associated to improper hygiene of the eyelids, to bacterial infections (specially staphylococcus aureus), to dysfunctions of the tiny eyelid glands or to allergic phenomena. Children are also prone to blepharitis even it tends to disappear spontaneously with age.

Blepharitis is typically chronic and both top and bottom eyelids in both eyes can be irritated by various factors such as smog, dry air, polluted air, etc. Management of blepharitis is difficult but together with the specific therapy, regular and accurate hygiene of the eyelids is a very important part of the treatment and aids prevention of such pathologies.

Adequate preparation of the eyes before surgical procedure is very important for the prevention of infective complications. Three to four days before surgery, even where no tissue damage is evident, the patient should perform accurate cleansing of the eyelid rim with a sterile gauze pad absorbed in specific liquid in order to cleanse away residues of polluting substances.

Eyelid hygiene is also important after surgery in order to remove secretion debris caused by reactive phenomena and prevent depositing of microbial substrates on the rims of the eyelid. Treatment before surgical procedures, in conditions of traumas or infections must begin with specific, delicate eyelid hygiene.
Soaked gauze pads and deterging solutions must not only be sterile but also well tolerated when used on the delicate skin of the eyelids and surrounding area: not irritating, nor producing sensitivity. Even the minimum quantity of wetting agent or detergent in contact with the ocular mucous must avoid irritating or toxic reactions.

More than 40% of contact lens wearers suffer from dysfunction of the eyelid glands. It is therefore important for all contact lens wearers to regularly perform accurate cleansing of the eyelids.
Adequately cleansing the eyelids also helps maintain the lipid component of the tear film within physiological limits, and therefore avoids instability of this delicate structure.

Description

IRIDIUM® gauze pads, an aid to healthy and beautiful eyes

Cleansed face does not guarantee adequately cleansed eyes...

Numerous external physical, chemical and biological agents expose our eyes to physical irritation: light rays, hydrocarburants, combustion products, bacteria, viruses, and allergens in general.

The symptoms that are caused by theses substances are: itchiness, redness, lacrimation, mucous secretion, and sensation of foreign body in the eye, edema of the eyelids.

To alleviate irritation we have a tendency to rub our eyes with our fingers that can only make the symptom worse by adding other irritating external agents.

While the habit of washing ones face a few times a day is recommended, this does not guarantee that our eyes are clean. Correct daily ophthalmic hygiene is particularly important in conditions of eye infections, blepharitis, systemic infections, allergies, traumas, and ophthalmic surgical procedures

IRIDIUM® gauze pads are specifically designed for ocular hygiene and is able to cleanse away ocular secretion, environment pollution, microorganisms and allergens.

IRIDIUM® gauze pads, thanks to its antinflammatory and antimicrobic (echinacea, glycyrrhetinic acid) and antiendemic (bromeline) properties alleviate the symptons rapidly.

IRIDIUM® gauze pads is the first and only medical device classed under Ocular Hygiene available on the European market.

As Medical Device IRIDIUM® gauze pads is classed as a product of elevated quality and proved efficacy with regards to hygiene and eyelid care during inflammatory and infective diseases and before and after surgical procedures.

Echinacea significantly gradually increases the levels of properdin, the globulin protein that is found in the blood serum that participates in antibacterial and antiviral activity.
It also has the ability to increase resistance (Interleukin 1 modulator) and in flogosis regression following infectious conditions (antihyaluronidase).

Bromeline is a proteolytic digestive enzyme active against inflammatory and edemic reactions.

Glycyrrhetinic acid is a natural component of the extract of the liquorice plant with antiflogosis and antiedema properties.
