GINKGO BILOBA

The Ginkgo Biloba tree has antique origins and records of its properties being used in Chinese medicine date as far back as 2800 B.C.
Originally, the sap from the leaves was used against toothache, acne and also some infections.

Today Ginkgo Biloba is still renowned for many scientifically proved mechanisms of activity, such as anti-platelet aggregation and haemoreoligic activities, which guarantees ematic fluidity and improved blood circulation within the smaller vessels, the arterioles.
Since this activity has been demonstrated also in the retina, Ginkgo Biloba is used also in age-related macular degeneration.
Ginkgo Biloba can also be useful to improve the nourishment and oxidation of the retina.

LUTEIN and Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration is the principle cause of blindness in the western world in people of more than 40 years of age.
The progression of this pathological condition is gradual and painless and involves the macula, a very small area at the very centre of the retina that allows the eye to see finely defined images. On the onset of AMD central vision slowly becomes blurred or distorted. On average about 40 million people in the world suffer from some symptom of this pathology.

More than 40 scientific articles concerning this pathology report that Lutein offers a protective activity against AMD.
Lutein belongs to the xanthophyll family carotenoids and is found in various leaf vegetables such as spinach and broccoli.
Lutein mecchanism of activity produces a double effect:
- photoprotection against blue light (shield effect);
- neutralization of free radicals and reactive oxygen species.

Therefore Lutein helps to protect the macula from photostress and the retinal cells from the oxidative stress caused by the free radicals on the membrane phospholipids.

retina

The properties of Ginkgo biloba help to improve the retinal blood flow and the perfusion speed, which in turn stimulates a greater concentration of Lutein, vitamins and trace elements in the retinal tissue, especially in conditions of metabolic and vascular disorder such as AMD.
Ginkgo biloba extract produces a “scavenger” effect: helps to prevent the endothelial damage of the capillaries, and the neuronal damage of the photoreceptors caused by free radicals.
It also helps to improve the ematic flow by modulating vascular tone, and to reduce plasma viscosity, which subsequently increases the erythrocyte deformability.

The roles of zinc, copper and selenium produce a metabolic effect and help to activate the enzymatic complexes of the organism’s protective system against oxidative stress.

Vitamin E is a liposoluble antioxidant that helps to protect the retinal photoreceptors from lipoperoxidation.

Product Use

INDICATIONS

MACULAR® active is indicated in cases when the organism requires lutein, zinc, selenium, vitamin E and flavonoids in order to improve the principle biochemical processes associated to correct retinal and lutea macular functionality.
MACULAR® active is available in chrono active tablets that are gradually absorbed and cover the daily need of the active ingredients.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
One tablet per day.

Warning
The activity of Ginkgo biloba has a synergic effect with anticoagulants and platelet aggregation inhibitors, therefore in the case of concomitant treatment with these drugs the doctor must be consulted before taking this product.

PACKAGE
Box containing 20 chrono active tablets.
