Dry eye syndrome is a very common pathology in ophthalmology outpatient departments and can be defined as a lachrymal film disorder caused by reduced production of tears or excessive tear evaporation which causes pain on the eye surface associated with discomfort.
There are many symptoms relating to it which differ in seriousness, but even those which are less serious cause the patient to worry and can affect their quality of life.
All the symptoms can be traced to damage to the corneal and conjunctival surface and are mainly manifested as eye discomfort, itching, burning, and the sensation of a foreign body or photophobia.
Literature states that on ageing, tear production progressively decreases and it has been shown that at the age of 65, the amount of tears produced is less than 40% of the amount produced at the age of 18. Nevertheless, it is also known that environmental conditions, such as dry climates, the sun and wind and also microclimates which are not suitable due to excess heating, ventilation or air conditioning, and the use of contact lenses can alter the lachrymal film fundamentally increasing the evaporation of water in which it is particularly rich. Physiological conditions and the quantitative and qualitative balance of the lachrymal film are therefore altered with negative repercussions, also of a phlogistic nature, for all the tissues next to and which constitute the eye surface.
Factors tied to systemic pathologies other than topical eye pathologies must be considered among those negative conditions which can affect the integrity and stability of the lachrymal film.

The aim of treatment with tear substitutes is to stabilize the altered lachrymal film and, in particular, stabilize the cornea-tear interfaces, with the main aim of interrupting the vicious circle which is created between keratoconjunctivitis sicca – phlogosis of the eye surfaces – and reduction in tear secretion, as often occurs in syndromes associated with a qualitative and quantitative alteration of the lachrymal film.

Other aims of these ophthalmic solutions are the lubrication of the eye surface, to protect it from damage from palpebral friction, and the administration of a liquid which is as similar as possible to the composition or quality of physiological lachrymal fluid in order to replenish the lachrymal components lost.

Description

Solution of 0.5% hypromellose with N-IG

NEXT® 500 is a sterile ophthalmic solution with a lubricant and moistening effect.

NEXT® 500 is a new tear substitute based on a 0.5% concentration of HYPROMELLOSE with an innovative preservative complex based on N-IG - EDTA specifically developed for the eye surface.

Hypromellose is a polymer with mucomimetic characteristics which replenishes and stabilizes the lachrymal film on the surface of the cornea creating a protective, transparent and visco-elastic film.
Hypromellose is a viscose derived from cellulose which, thanks to its optimal surface properties, is an improvement on other preparations based on methylcellulose.

Thanks to its excellent lubricant and stabilizing effect on the lachrymal film, its prolonged persistence on the eye and high concentration of hypromellose, NEXT®500, uniformly distributing itself on the eye surface and adhering to it, protects, moistens and lubricates it providing long-term relief from problems caused by dry eye syndrome (burning, sensation of dryness or of a foreign body, etc.).

NEXT® 500 is a tear substitute which is particularly recommended in those cases of more severe dry eye syndrome in which the eye needs greater lubrication and protection during both the day and night.

In particular NEXT® 500 is recommended in cases of:

- moderate-serious alterations to the lachrymal film, often present in old age;
- primary and secondary Sjögren syndrome;
- damage to the eye surface as a result of contact lense use;
- in all cases in which it is necessary to minimize the evaporation of natural tears, also during sleep.

NEXT® 500 effectively combats eye symptoms caused by environmental irritants (atmospheric pollution), visual agents (eye strain) or mechanical agents (contact lenses).

NEXT® 500contains an innovative PRESERVATIVE COMPLEX based on N-hydroxymethylglycinate (N-IG), a modified amino acid derived from natural glycin in association with sodium edetate (EDTA), an antimicrobial with elevated bacteriostatic, bactericide and antimicotic effect, which studies have shown to be:
- NON SENSITIZING
- NON-IRRITATING
- NON EPITHELIOTOXIC

Product Use
